Go with your gut
Who would have thought a passion for perfect poop could lead to starting a business and even an appearance on Dragon’s Den? Well that’s exactly what happened to us. As doting pet parents to Smudge (a lovable Lhasa Apso) and Boo (our mischievous kitten) we went through turmoil as a result of their tummy troubles until – eureka!
Smudge had always been a little sensitive but when Boo came along, we couldn’t ignore the issue. Greeted with daily explosions in her litter tray we knew something was wrong. We tried everything we could to no avail until we were prescribed a probiotic by our vet.
Probiotics not to be confused with prebiotics, are live bacteria that are beneficial to your health, sometimes known as good or friendly bacteria. They help balance the bacteria in the gut and studies show how they can help improve digestion, reduce instances of diarrhoea and more.
The impact was miraculous and almost immediate. Adding just a small dose to her food, by the next day her stools had improved, and we knew we were onto something. Her prescription lasted just a couple of weeks and in that time, we noticed the look of her coat improved and were convinced she became a more docile, playful kitty. The probiotics having relieved her of some gastric discomfort.
We saw first-hand the power of probiotics and the importance of gut health and embarked on our mission to help sensitive stomachs with gut friendly pet food and treats.
After months of research and consulting with dog and cat nutritionists we created our own recipes, crucially including the live bacteria which we add once the food has been cooked and cooled. Carefully selecting the highest quality ingredients to create a natural recipe, that’s high in meat and free from common allergens like gluten, beef, soy and dairy.
Of course, we had to achieve the wiggle of approval from our chief tasters Smudge and Boo, but once we had we were set. We created our first batch in the summer of 2018 and haven’t looked back since. Our families thought we were mad to quit our jobs to make pet food and quickly became bored of us talking of perfect poops, but sometimes you have to go with your gut!
We were delighted to meet Rob at Brown’s Natural Pet Store earlier this year, and he’s introduced our range into his fab stores, including our probiotic dry foods for cats and dogs. Alongside those there are our gut friendly wet foods and guilt-free treats which include slippery elm, an amazing natural tummy tonic.
