Begin by gently lifting your pet's lips to expose their teeth, offering praise as you do. Once they are happy with this, start running your finger along their gums and teeth, paying special attention to the back upper areas where plaque builds up easily.

Next, introduce them to a pet toothpaste by letting them lick a little from your finger. When they enjoy the taste, present the toothpaste on a damp pet toothbrush and allow them to lick it off.

Finally, combine everything. Gently brush just a few teeth at first, slowly increasing until you can brush all the outer surfaces. Remember, you don't need to brush the inside surfaces next to the tongue.

Your goal is to be able to give a calm 60-second brush, focusing on the outside surfaces of their teeth.

Always go at your pet's pace, with lots of praise. Make each step a positive experience before moving on.
