The Best Flea Treatment For Pets

Spoiler alert: it’s not treatment, it’s prevention.

If you do a quick online search for the ‘best flea treatment for pets’, you will be met with hundreds of different options. While the efficacy of these products varies (and we all know some of them are notoriously ineffective!) they all have one thing in common: They are toxic.

“Obviously! I want something that will kill fleas, and kill ‘em good.”

And we hear you, it’s a very valid point. We want chemicals like fipronil, imidacloprid, and permethrin to protect our pets from fleas and mites. But do we want them risking our pet's health, contaminating our homes, and damaging our wildlife and environment?

“No, but I don’t want my pet to get fleas either…”

We don’t blame you because let’s face it, fleas suck (sorry.) But there is a way to avoid these toxic chemicals and keep your pets parasite-free. Sound too good to be true? Well it’s not, it’s super easy, and all you need is the power of Mother Nature on your side.

PHARMACEUTICAL VS HERBAL

We need to point out that herbal remedies work differently from chemical treatments.

Pharmaceutical treatments use pesticides (small quantities of poison) to purge your pet’s body of parasites. Pets can react poorly to these, with symptoms like sore skin, fur loss, sickness, and digestive distress.

Herbal remedies harness repellent and insecticidal plants to make the body an inhospitable environment for parasites, preventing infestation in the first instance. They also benefit your pet’s overall health by improving skin condition and strengthening the gut.

Put bluntly, chemicals are the grenade and herbs are the shield.

Prevention is always better than cure. Using a monthly chemical flea treatment when your pet does not have fleas is like taking a painkiller just in case you get a headache.

HOW TO SWITCH

If you’re itching to get away from chemicals and jump into herbal remedies, it’s as easy as one, two, flea (we really are sorry.)

  1. Choose your remedy. We love Billy No Mates and Proflax Keep Off Me! Simply add to your pet’s food, overlapping with their final chemical flea treatment. For extra armour, use the Serendipity Neem Shield Spot On or Serendipity Neem Shield Spray.

  2. Use a flea comb to regularly check your pet for fleas and ticks (gold star if this is already part of your routine.)

  3. Witness herbal remedies making your pet healthier, and happier!
