THE VEGETABLE MIX THAT DOES MORE THAN FILL A BOWL

Vegetables are easy to overlook in a raw diet, yet around 80% of a dog's immune system sits in the gut, which is exactly where this blend goes to work. Formulated with canine nutritionist Caroline of Hedgerow Hounds, Betsy's Veg Blend uses low-GI vegetables like broccoli, kale, parsley, mint, blueberries, raspberries, fennel seed and calendula petals, deliberately avoiding starchy options like carrot that can aggravate itchy or yeasty skin. Supplied as a standard tub, it's a simple way to add genuine phytonutrient variety alongside a meat-based meal.

Why it's a great choice

  • Formulated with a canine nutritionist: Developed alongside Caroline of Hedgerow Hounds, the blend is built around vegetables chosen specifically for digestibility and nutritional value, not simply variety for its own sake.

  • Low-GI vegetables, chosen deliberately: Starchy, sugary vegetables such as carrot are left out because they're harder to digest and can worsen itchy or yeasty skin in sensitive dogs.

  • Seasonal and locally grown: Ingredients come from a single local supplier and change with the seasons, so the blend reflects genuinely fresh, in-season produce rather than a fixed year-round formula.

  • Soluble and insoluble fibre: Both fibre types are present to support the gut bacteria that underpin a large part of overall immune health.

Key benefits for your Dog

  • Supports gut and immune health: Fibre from the vegetable mix feeds beneficial gut bacteria, which plays a central role in overall immunity.

  • Eye health support: Broccoli contributes beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, nutrients associated with healthy vision.

  • Skin and seasonal allergy support: Mint contains antioxidants including rosmarinic acid, which may help with seasonal allergy symptoms, alongside breath-freshening benefits.

  • Gentle digestive support: Fennel seed soothes the gastrointestinal tract and helps alleviate gas, while parsley offers a mild diuretic effect alongside vitamin C, A, B and K.

A nutrient-dense vegetable addition for owners who want to round out a meat-based raw diet with genuine, gut-supporting variety.

Vegetable Blend: Spring/Summer (may vary slightly due to availability and seasonality)

Broccoli: Broccoli is a member of the (brassica) cabbage family. It offers dietary fibre as well as phytonutrients such as beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin which help fight against harmful disease and particularly supportive to correct vision and eye health.

Kale: Kale is a leafy green vegetable which has earned its “superfood” status, as it is so nutrient dense. Rich in vitaminA, C and E, B vitamins such as folate, which is needed for energy, as well as calcium, iron, selenium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium. It is also high in vitamin K which is essential for efficient healing of wounds.

Parsley: Parsley is generally only used as a garnish, but it has much more to offer than making our food look attractive. It provides vitamin C, A, B, K, calcium, riboflavin, potassium, iron, magnesium, niacin, carotenoids, chlorophyll, and fibre. It is a gentle diuretic and supportive for the urinary and digestive tract as well as being an age-old natural breath freshener.

Mint: The cooling flavour and uplifting aroma of mint is great for digestion and freshening the breath. Rich in antioxidants including vitamin C and beta-carotene and a substance called rosmarinic acid which can help in managing seasonal allergies.

Blueberries/Raspberries: Berries are an excellent source of antioxidants, phytochemicals, vitamins, and soluble fibre. Antioxidants fight free-radicals responsible for cellular and molecular damage and slow down the aging process and cognitive decline. Alongside antioxidants are Anthocyanins, which give berries their purple and red colour, they work with antioxidants to lower the risk of disease.

Fennel seeds: Fennel has a beautiful aniseed aroma and flavour. It has been used for centuries to soothe the gastrointestinal tract, assisting digestion and helping to alleviate gas. It also helps to freshen the breath and is traditionally used to increase milk flow in nursing mothers.

Calendula petals: Calendula with its vibrant yellow and orange petals, is a familiar sight in herb gardens. Traditionally used topically to heal skin conditions, it also has strong affinities with soothing the gut and mucus membranes.

An adult dog should eat approximately 2% to 3% of their ideal body weight daily. For instance, if your dog weighs 10kg, they should eat between 200g to 300g of Natural Instinct raw pet food each day.

Feeding recommendations can vary due to individual factors such as your pet's lifestyle, appetite, and temperament, which is why there is no substitute for knowing your pet.

For a healthy dog, it's advisable to maintain a natural waist, where you can feel their ribcage but not see it.
