The Simple Switch: How to Move From Chemical to Natural Parasite Protection

Not sure where to start?

Making the leap of faith from chemical treatments to natural remedies can be nerve-wracking. With the potential harmful effects of pharmaceutical treatments and the holistic benefits of herbs, we think it’s a choice that supports your pet’s overall vitality, not just fights parasites.

Ready to make the simple switch? Flea season starts as early as March, so now is the perfect time to try our step-by-step guide!

Step 1
Create a clean slate

Natural remedies work brilliantly on a preventative basis, so before you start, ensure your pet has the all-clear.

If you don’t see fleas: proceed to Step 2!

If you spot fleas: Start by giving your dog a bath with a natural flea shampoo such as Neem Team’s Neem Shield– for best results, leave it to sit on the coat for around five minutes. For cats, DiatomPure Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth is a great lick-safe option for gentle elimination.

You will also need to treat your home to break the flea life cycle. Vacuum thoroughly and use a non-toxic treatment such as Diatomaceous Earth or Neem Team’s Neem Shield Household Spray. Once your pet and home are parasite-free, you’re ready to start with daily prevention.

Step 2
Choose your herbal heroes

Billy No Mates is a bestseller at Brown’s, and it comes in either a tincture or dry herbal mix to add to your pet’s food. Proflax’s Keep Off Me! powder is also a great option, blending neem with lemon balm and peppermint. Both of these remedies use herbs to create a smell through your pet’s skin and coat– a bit like a herby, natural perfume. This is undetectable to us and your pet, but very nasty to fleas, ticks, and mites! Simply add to your pet’s food daily for protection from the inside out.

Step 3
Slowly introduce your remedy

This is the crucial part, especially if your pet is fussy. As natural remedies work with fragrant herbs, some pets need time to get used to the smell. As a general rule, starting with a tiny amount (e.g. 1 drop of tincture, or a pinch of powder), you can build up to the full recommended dosage over 10-14 days. If your pet refuses their food when you increase the dose, return to the previous dosage and try again in a few days. Slow and steady wins the race!

If your pet continuously refuses natural remedies on their food, you can try introducing something strong-smelling to mask the taste. JR Pure Pates and Arden Grange Liver Paste are great for this. It also creates a fun routine and bonding experience for you and your pet– before long, they’ll be reminding you it’s time for their flea remedy!

Step 4
Monitor your pet

As with any new supplement or medication, it’s important to monitor your pet for any adverse effects– and of course, for any fleas or ticks! Using a flea comb, check your pet daily for any signs of parasites, especially during the summer months.

Whether you are using natural or chemical products, it’s always a good idea to reduce the risk of picking up fleas and ticks where possible: avoid overgrown grassy areas, dense woodlands, and places where wild animals frequent.

Step 5
Rejoice at the benefits of herbs!

And because natural remedies are holistic, you may find some surprise benefits such as improved stools, a shinier coat, and less itching.
